Acer fabri 10 seeds 2

Acer fabri’s dark green leaves are untanned and have a beautiful shiny emerald green sheen. The new growth shoots are red-tipped. The samaras (seed) are bright red and contrast beautifully with the very dark glossy green leaves. This is an interesting Chinese evergreen maple and is rare in cultivation. Although it is sometimes called Faber’s maple, I prefer the generic name “Emerald Jade Maple” coined by Dr. Donglin Zhang of UGA.

Although the Emerald Jade maple can handle some sunlight, this is the ultimate shade tree. In China, Acer fabri is often used as a houseplant because it can thrive and do well in deep shade.

Acer fabri is certainly a great collector piece and conversation piece in any garden.
