Acer buergerianum, better known as the trident maple, is a native to Japan and China. It has a lovely rounded crown and an upright bushy shape. Foliage is the typical three lobed maple leaf with slight variations of some of its cousins that result in it sometimes being described as duckfoot foliage. The bark is another attractive feature – exfoliating in scales and plates in an interesting mix of Orange, brown and gray. It is like a bonsai subject that this species excels – beautiful shape, bark, attractive visually with its leaf in varying colors. Best in full sun, trident maple prefers moist, slightly acidic soil.
