A large, dry deciduous tree up to more than 20 m (65 ft) long, with a thick, bottle-shaped tree trunk up to 5 m (16 ft) or more in diameter. The attractive, large, red flowers open at night. It is found in northwestern Madagascar in seasonally moist, dry deciduous forests. In cultivation best in the arid tropics in USDA Zones 10 and above. Soak seeds in water for a day before sowing in a well suction substrate.
