It is native to New Mexico and western Texas in the U.S. and in Mexico from Tamaulipas south to Hidalgo where it is found on rocky ground at an altitude between 900 and 2100 m (3000 and 7,000 ft), often as carpeting in large areas. It easily adapts to cultivation in a temperate climate and can grow in many environments as long as it has a well-drained spot in full sun. It is hardy to severe frost and drought.
