The queen of the Agaves, not only the most beautiful, but the most suitable for cultivation in climates with cold, wet winters. Native to northeastern Mexico. It grows up to 3500 m (11,500 ft) basically as an undergrowth plant in pine and oak forests, where summers are cool and winters hard. Snow, ice, and sub-zero temperatures are the norm for these high hills, and this Agave is reasonably expected to survive down to -15°C (5°F), even in humid conditions.

Description

The queen of the Agaves, not only the most beautiful, but the most suitable for cultivation in climates with cold, wet winters. Native to northeastern Mexico. It grows up to 3500 m (11,500 ft) basically as an undergrowth plant in pine and oak forests, where summers are cool and winters hard. Snow, ice, and sub-zero temperatures are the norm for these high hills, and this Agave is reasonably expected to survive down to -15°C (5°F), even in humid conditions. This is not a desert plant! Agave montana grows as a large, dense, solitary rosette of broad, powdered gray-green leaves with a red spiky margin and terminal back. Seeds are only available in very small quantities because it was only discovered about 10 years ago. Our effort is the first major collection and will hopefully be able to expand the cultivation of this beautiful plant. Our seeds come from the best plants at about 3000 m (10000 ft).
