Araucaria araucana
Originates from the southern part of the Andes. The broadly pyramidal, very open crown is composed of main branches arranged in whorls. In old specimens, the top of the crown becomes rounder, branching is denser, and branches sag more. It is a dioecious tree where the female specimens can grow very tall and the male trees only grow to about 18 m in height. The bark is strongly pleated on the underside and resembles an elephant’s foot. Young twigs have a green color; later they turn brown. The broad triangular needles are arranged radially around the branch, are very sturdy and have a sharp tip. The lifespan of a needle can be 10 to 15 years. The brown upright cones are nearly round and are about 15 cm in diameter. The tree is difficult to transplant. Araucaria araucana is named after the Araucans, an Indian tribe from southern Chile. In their habitat, this decorative Araucaria species formed large forests
