A large, densely populated clustering bamboo native to the evergreen forests of the Himalayas to Southeast Asia and southern China. Has dark green or gray straight or curved culms up to more than 20 m (65 feet) high and up to 19 cm (7 inches) in diameter. The large leaves can reach 37 cm (15 inches) in length. The large culms are used for construction and roofing, and the young shoots are edible. It is suitable for cultivation in tropical and warm temperate climates in USDA zones 10 and above.
