A large bamboo native to southern China and Indochina with clustering tight culms about 20 metres (65 ft) high and 15 cm (6 in) in diameter. Its large leaf blades give a very tropical look. In cultivation does best in the tropics. It will also grow happily in warm temperate regions and is hardy to USDA zone 9, but quite the same proportions there cannot be reached.

In cultivation does best in the tropics. It will also grow happily in warm temperate regions and is hardy to USDA zone 9, but quite the same proportions there cannot be reached. The strong culms are used for construction, the young shoots are edible.
