A giant bamboo from China with huge, bluish-green culms and dense, deep green, beautifully overarching foliage. It can grow to nearly 30 meters (100 feet) tall in a climate with hot, humid summers but also well in cooler areas, where it generally continues to grow much smaller, sometimes as little as 3 meters (10 feet) high. It is very hardy and can take very severe freezes down to nearly -20°C (-4°F) and thus suitable for USDA factory harshness zones 7 through 11. In China and Japan, this bamboo is one of the most popular for its edible new shoots
