Recently distributed under a new species of Butia odorata (= B. capitata var. Odorata), this hidden Butia originates from a coastal vegetation on white sand known as Restinga, in Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul northeasternmost in southern Brazil. Some features that clearly distinguish it are the compact, wind-resistant habits with a short trunk that rarely grows up to 2 m high, a small crown with often stiff, straight leaves and its small fruits and small ellipsoid seeds. Seeds and plants of this species have been distributed in the past as B. capitata var. odorata, B. odorata or B. capitata “Nana”. A Butia grown in France as B. capitata var. strictior could belong in this species.
