Butia odorata is a popular, hardy, spring-leaved palm native to Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil and Uruguay and is widely cultivated throughout the world, usually under the name B. capitata. It is a large, robust plant with recurved, strongly keeled leaves, a sturdy stem and delicious edible, yellow fruit with round or slightly elongated seeds. Leaf color is highly variable and the seeds offered here are from rare individuals with beautiful, silvery blue foliage. Butia odorata will succeed in all but the coldest temperate and warm temperate climates, but does not like tropical climates. One of the few truly strong spring palms that tolerates extremely low temperatures in old age.
