A beautiful, graceful blue/gray Butia, this sturdy palm is native to the plains of southern Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina, where it experiences hot summers and cold winters. There it converges in huge populations of trees that reach more than 10 m (30 feet) in height! We expect plants in cultivation to eventually grow even taller. The tree is prized locally for its sweet and delicious fruit.
It is very frost resistant and established plants of good size have been known to survive -10C or even recover from lower temperatures when damaged, although protection during such periods of cold is strongly recommended.
