This sparsely spiny species can grow over 2.5 m in length and develops long stems up to 12 cm thick. It rarely blooms. The flowers are white, up to 15 cm across, and open at night, then wilt. The plant likes plenty of light, not full sun. It tolerates frost down to -4 Celsius.

Propagation is by seed or cuttings. This plant is also used as a rootstock in the (re)cultivation of other cacti.
