Opuntia requires a nutrient-poor, sandy and well-drained soil. Plant them in a spacious tub or large flower pot. Neglect them, don’t give them too much attention! Cacti are more likely to die from too much water than from drought. The plant should hibernate indoors. A temperature of 10 – 12 °C is enough for a young plant. An older plant can tolerate 2 – 3 °C frost. To be on the safe side, cover plants that hibernate outdoors with spruce branches.
