Description

Cryptomeria japonica, better known as Japanese cedar, is a forest tree native to Japan and southern China. It is a long, cone-shaped evergreen with bluish-green foliage and a massive trunk with thick reddish-brown bark that patches and peels into long strips.

This is a fast-growing tree (up to 7 meters in 10 uears), which in its native habitat, can get more than 50metres high with a tree trunk diameter over 3m. ornamental specimens rarely exceed more than 20m in height, and many of the named selections remain much smaller. The branches are arranged in horizontal layers, ascending at first, then hanging near their purposes. The flattened, wedge-shaped leaves are about 1.3 cm long and point forward, while their bases buckle the twigs. The leaves are overlapping and press in 5 grades that spiral around and completely camouflage the twigs. Male and female cones, 2.5 cm or less in length, are on the same tree.
