The persimmon belongs to the species Diospyros persimmon and is also called Oriental persimone, Asian persimone or Japanese persimone. Sometimes the name ‘Sharon’ is also used as a synonym for the khaki, but below under the heading “commercial aspects” you can read why this is not correct.

The genus Diospyros includes several other species with edible fruits, such as the hardy American persimone (Diospyros virginiana) which bears smaller fruits and the also hardy lotus tree or persimmon (Diospyros lotus) which bears even smaller fruits. In addition, there are several other non-hardy Diospyros species from tropical and sub-tropical areas. However, we will limit ourselves here to the species Diospyros kaki.

The persimmon occurs naturally in the Himalayas and in the mountains of Myanmar, Thailand, Indochina, Korea and Japan.
