The dragon blood tree (Dracaena draco) is a plant native to the Canary Islands, Cape Verde and Madeira.
Currently, the plant can hardly be found in a wild state. The plant, up to 12 m high, is characterized by one or more trunks with a dense, umbrella-shaped crown with thick leaves. It is a slow-growing plant, which takes ten years to reach a height of 1 m. Since the plant is a monocotyledonous, it has no annual rings. The age of the plant can only be estimated from the number of branches. The plants are believed to be thousands of years old. The oldest known specimen grows in Icod de los Vinos on the northwest of Tenerife.
If the bark is incised or the leaves are bruised, the plant secretes a reddish resin, known as dragon’s blood. This was used by the Romans and medieval alchemists. The people believed that it was blood of European dragons.
