A large non-woody tree (actually a giant monocarp evergreen perennial)[4] to 6 meters (20 feet), it has a sturdy trunk of tightly overlapping leaf bases, and large banana-like leaf blades up to 5 m (16 ft) long by 1 m (3 ft 3 in) wide, with a salmon-pink midrib. The flowers, which only once move from the center of the tree at the end of the tree’s life, are covered in massive thyrses pendant by equally large pink bracts. The fruits are similar to those of the internal bananas, are edible but tasteless with hard, black, round seeds. After flowering, the plant dies back.
