A robust ginger native to moist forests in the eastern Himalayas, the Khasia Hills and Indo-China between 1200 and 2400 m with thick shoots from 1 to about 1.8 m high that bears large leaves and a large, terminal inflorescence with strongly fragrant, yellow and orange flowers. Easy to grow, it adapts well to many temperate climates. Under cool conditions, the foliage is in winter and even survives a strong freeze.
