This extremely rare hardy palm tree comes from Chile. In its natural habitat where it is often very dry, it is a slow grower that eventually forms a single massive trunk. In culture in Chile, a jubaea grows much faster up to 20 cm and 8 leaves per year. Old specimens are already growing in France and there is also an impressive specimp boot in Locarno. The last harsh winters in France endured these jubeae chilensis without any problems. In the Netherlands there is an 8 meter high palm in Weert. From June to November, this newly planted palm already produced four leaves. The expected growth rate in the Netherlands is around 10-15 cm per year. A reasonable plant therefore has a winter hardiness of up to – 15 degrees. There are already known cases where a jubaea chilensis has withstood 18 degrees of frost. An adult plant with a trunk of 3 meters is quickly 60 to 100 years old. The thick trunk and the up to 8 meter large crown of the jubea are a feast for the eyes.
