This rare banana from the rainforests of the subtilan rainforests of Indonesia’s Papua province, growing there at altitudes between 1000 and 1600, was first described in 2001. It grows as a small stemmed, medium-sized banana with robust, brown to 4 m tall pseudo-stems, about 2.5 m long, upright leaves and a horizontal inflorescence with dense, short, highly curved, bright orange fruit. Musa johnsii is one of only six known banana species with schizocarp fruits, where the scale ripens on its own and the flesh is visible. It is unknown in culture, but has no special requirements in tropical and some warm temperate climates.
