Musa textilis (Borneo) 5 seeds
€2,95
The (Musa textilis) is a banana species that provides a fiber, the manila hemp. Like all bananas, it is a hefty plant (up to a height of 8 m) with a false stem, which consists of wide leaf sheaths that spread horizontally at the top.
Around 1800, its cultivation was organized by the Spanish government in the Philippines, which now has the de facto monopoly of this production due to their very favorable climate and the presence of the necessary labor for loosening the fibers. At harvest, the trunks are cut into pieces, and the leaf sheaths are separated by longitudinal incisions. The fibers can have a length of more than two meters.
The manila hemp is almost exclusively used in the rope butchery and is highly valued because it gives lighter and stronger rope than ordinary hemp and is more resistant to the action of seawater.
In addition, carrier bags are produced from Abaca under the name ZeroTree. Production takes place in the Philippines.
