Alpinia nutans is an evergreen perenial. Hardy to zone 7, false cardamom is very easy to grow, and will grow from a small rhizome split into a huge specimen in just a few years. If not protected from freezing, it will die back to the ground, but again will show from the rhizomes in the spring, if the soil does not freeze. If you continue to give it room to spread, the lump will soon be several feet wide and three feet long. In a shady tropical garden, the glossy dense foliage is lush and beautiful.
