It forms dense clusters of sturdy, erect shoots with large, leathery, dark green leaves and terminal inflorescences with waxy, white or pink, red-spotted flowers witha red and yellow throat. It is a popular ornamental plant for tropical and warm temperate regions and one of the cold, hardier gingers.
