The soft fin palm (Caryota mitis) is an erect, up to 12 m tall palm with a slender, gray or green trunk. Usually several trunks grow together. The leaves are bipinnate, up to 3 m long.
The second-generation leaflets are crookedly triangular-fan-shaped with a jagged truncated end.

The palm does not bloom until it has reached its final size. The brush-shaped, long-stemmed inflorescences with beaded branches, grow laterally from the trunk and consist of small, greenish flowers. The first inflorescences arise at the top of the trunk, after which gradually more and more inflorescences arise from top to bottom. The fruits are spherical, up to about 2 cm long, evergreen for a long time, then reddish-brown for a short time and finally ripening to black. When the fruits of the lower inflorescences are ripe, the palm dies.
