A truly beautiful, large Costus native to rainforests of Colombia through Ecuador to northern Peru, which forms a cluster of shoots with leaves arranged in spiral manner. The long basal inflorescences can reach about 1 m in height and sport many wide triangular, bright red bracts. In cultivation, it is quite rare, but will grow well in the tropics in full sun or shade. The inflorescence makes an excellent cut flower.
