In the Four Corners area these high and spreading cacti are found in only a few places in southwestern Colorado, one in the southeast corner of Utah, no one in Arizona, but they are much more common in New Mexico. Main branches are naughty and thick, spines are numerous, but do not obscure the main branch, and flowers are large, numerous, and attractive. The plants thrive on hot areas of sand, rock, and grasslands where they usually grow 4-7 feet tall and four feet wide. The population in the photos on this website grows to a maximum of five meters high and wide.

The abundant populations of this plant in central New Mexico and eastern Colorado usually have a strong central trunk branching a 6-16 inches above the ground and the branches curve slightly and then rise vertically upwards. The plants on this website are usually four meters long, they branch near ground level, and the branches can be horizontal for three meters.
