Description
native to rainforests between low altitudes and 2,500 m in Ecuador and Colombia, this fantastic, medium to large Heliconia has impressive, long, pendulous and distichous inflorescences with many red and yellow bracts. Most impressive, however, are its bright red young stems, making it the Heliconia equivalent of the famous lipstick palm Cyrtostachys. In cultivation it does best in tropical and frost-free warm temperate climates, but is still rare and plants, in the few nurseries that offer them, command very high prices.
