Heliconia psittacorum or parrot banana is a perennial herb that can reach 1-3 m in height. He has a creeping rhizome.
The leaves are elongated, 15–100 cm long and 6–20 cm wide. They are dark green and leathery. The lower leaves have a long petiole, the upper leaves almost no petiole.
The erect inflorescences are 9 cm long, with orange 3–15 cm long bracts that are usually red at the apex. The flowers are 2.5 to 5 cm long, tubular, orange, yellow or greenish with a dark green to black tip.
