The flowers are followed by plump, vase-shaped or barrel-shaped, red to purple fruits that are dotted with bundles of glochids (painfully sharp micro-spines) but no large reddish spines. The stem pads are dull green, flattened, oval to shape of an inverted teardrop, and have 0 to 6 white or less often yellow, drooping spines surrounded by sparse, brown, or golden glochids at each areole. Many of the large spines have a dark base.
