Opuntia phaeacantha growing shrubby, stretched to the ground stretched to length. It often forms large cushions that reach a height of up to 90 centimeters and a width of 2.5 meters. The reversed-oval to almost circular disc sections are blue-green and often have a purple-colored hood. They are 10 to 40 cm long, 7–24 cm wide and 1.2 to 1.5 cm thick. The extensive tapered leaves are up to 9 millimeters long. The 2 to 2.5 centimeter spaced elliptical areoles bear brown, reddish-brown or yellow-brown, up to 12 mm long glochids. The 1-10 spines that are rarely missing are reddish-brown to dark brown. They originate all areoles or are confined to the upper part of the engine sections. The 2.5–8 cm long thorns are transgressive, erect or recurved, sometimes bent or twisted, subulate or flattened.
