An erect bush up to 1 m (rarely up to 2 m) in height. True leaves are early shed and stem parts are often mistakenly referred to as leaves. Lower segments can be thickened and stem forms on older plants while flattened higher segments are up to 40 cm long and up to 25 cm wide. Fruits are egg-shaped with a depressed top, purple when ripe and edible. Seeds light brown up to 5 mm long.

Distinctive features: Distinguished by showy yellow flowers about 6 cm wide; presence of small hairs (glochids) in clusters in depressions (areoles) on segments and fruits, these glochids easily attach to the skin and are difficult to remove; areoles on segments can also have 1 or no spines up to 6 cm long.

Distribution: Spread by seed or vegetatively by segments that root where they touch the ground.
