A ginger from mountain forests in the Himalayas up to m (5600 ft) 1700 with shoots up to about 1.2 m (4 ft) high arising from an underground rhizome. In summer, small flowers are produced in a compact inflorescence on the ground, followed by a very attractive cluster of bright red fruits. In winter, the shoots die to the ground. One of the stronger gingers, Z. chrysanthum does well in most temperate climates with reasonably warm summers and winters without too much frost.
