A small ginger native to the undergrowth of forests in the hills of Khasia and the eastern Himalayas in India. It produces many short, green stems of an underground rhizome. The inflorescences are naughty, red sitting on the ground and produce very beautiful, orchid-like flowers. It grows easily in cultivation, well adapted to most warm temperate climates and one of the few-zingiber that will tolerate cool winters while still being an exuberant flowering plant.
