A small, shrub-like, dioecious gymnocass native to desert areas from Oregon, Utah and New Mexico in the United States to Baja California and central Mexico between 300 and 1900 m (1000 and 6200 ft). It forms a low, spreading bush with dense branching, almost bare, gray shoots. It has medicinal properties and is usually used in the form of tea to treat various ailments. In cultivation, it is difficult, adaptable, drought tolerant and hardy to severe frosts in USDA Zones 6 to 9. The seeds germinate quickly and easily without stratification.
