A small but impressive dry deciduous-juicy tree of southern Madagascar with a very thick, straight, columnar, pale trunk that rarely grows more than 6 m (20 ft) tall and has a compact, thin branching crown. The simple, glossy leaves form a rosette palmlike on top of each prickly shoot. The flowers are white, fragrant and reminiscent of those of the Plumeria. A great ornament for the drier tropics and a beautiful and very popular houseplant elsewhere, usually sold under the name “Madagascar Palm” even though it is, of course, not related to the latter.
