While it is generally similar to the closely related S. palmetto, this is a medium-sized, robust stocky species, which is part of the island of Bermuda. It forms a sturdy trunk that rarely rises to more than 10 m (33 ft) in height. In addition, it has wide, rigid leaf segments. The leaf blades split to only about half the length and the relatively large, slightly pear-shaped fruits are easily distinguished at this palm. Sabal bermudana can still occasionally be seen in cultivation under the names S. beccariana, S. princeps or S. blackburniana. A very simple and flexible palm that grows in temperate areas as well as in the tropics and can handle a good amount of frost and cold.
