This dwarf palm is the smallest of the Sabal and an important and popular species because of its legendary winter hardiness. In some places in its natural habitat, it experiences extreme lows close to -20 °C (-4 °F). The Dwarf Palmetto is very flexible and can be seen in cultivation all over the world, from as far north as Sweden all the way to the tropics, such as Singapore. Occurring naturally in the undergrowth of deciduous forests in the southeastern United States, it can be quite a common component of vegetation. In spring, it produces long, straight inflorescences that grow well above the leaves and bear thousands of small, white flowers. The Louisiana variety offered here is a particularly potent blue-leaf shape, which eventually has a short, above-ground trunk up to 2 m (6 ft) high.
