There’s not much to say about the humble “Trachy” that hasn’t been said before. This most popular of the hardy palms was already cultivated in the West for a hundred and fifty years since the explorer and adventurer Robert Fortune first saw growing (but not wanted) on Chusan (now Zhousan) Island off the east coast of China. Grown on the mainland much longer than that, its origins have been obscured in history. The hardiness against cold is legendary, as is the easy to maintain nature, and its wide availability means that it is often the first hardy palm that many of us own. It is also likely to be the palm species best tested and documented for frost resistance.
