Young plants have smaller leaves without lobes and holes, but older plants have lobed leaves with holes. The fruit of the hole plant is up to 25 cm long and 3-4 cm wide and resembles a green horse’s ear containing a corncob with hexagonal scales. It takes a year for the fruit to ripen and for it to be safe to consume.

The seedlings grow to the darkest place until they find a tree to attach to and grow upward toward the light.
