There are several Dutch names in circulation for this tree: persimmon, or kakipruim, or lotus tree. But also under the name “god pear” this tree is known. An intriguing name. Although, literally translated, ‘dios’ means = god and ‘pyros’ = pear, so it’s actually not that crazy. Whether the “pears” of these Diospyros also taste divine may well be; the tree is even grown in Germany and France because of its fruits. These are small, yellow, less than 2 cm large cherries that turn blue / black as they ripen and taste sweet. These ieniemienie pears do not last long, so pick and feast quickly! Although this Hoogvliet Diospyros is still a bit young to bear a lot of fruit.
The flowering is in June/July, small flowers with a large calyx. That’s where the word ‘lotus’ comes from. This god tree can grow about 10 meters in 4 years and eventually grow up to 30 meters high. But that will not happen quickly in our not too warm country and we will have to be happy with about 15 meters. Also high!
The Diospyros lotus is deciduous but, before that happens, gets a festive autumn hue in the color king gold!
